These whole oat groats (or oat kernels) come to us courtesy of Stephen and Tania Walter at Burrum Biodynamics—a family-run farm in Marnoo, western Victoria, certified biodynamic through Demeter Australia.

Grown using regenerative practices that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem balance, these oats are harvested in their whole, and then stabilised and hulled by Blue Lake Milling in nearby Bordertown. This is the same Mitika variety used in our creamy and quick rolled oats, just in its most natural state.

Oat groats are our least processed form of oats—ideal for home milling, long-soak porridges, grain salads, slow cooker meals, or as a base for pilafs and grain bowls. Their nutty, mild flavour and dense texture make them incredibly versatile in whole food kitchens.

Packed in a family friendly compostable 5kg bag, these groats are a pantry essential for bakers, millers, or anyone who wants to get closer to the grain.

Why we love them:

  • Grown by Burrum Biodynamics in Marnoo, VIC

  • Certified biodynamic by Demeter Australia

  • Mitika variety – known for its creamy flavour and soft grain

  • Whole oat groats – ideal for home milling or long-cook dishes

  • No processing, no additives, just clean grain

From the farm:

Stephen and Tania Walter have spent over two decades building soil and restoring balance to their farm through biodynamic methods. Their oats are grown without chemicals, and their farm ecosystem thrives with healthy soils, active microbial life, and full-season crop rotations. Read more about their approach here.

FAQs

What are oat groats?

Oat groats are the whole, hulled oat grain—before it’s steamed, rolled, or cut. They’re minimally processed and retain the full bran layer, germ, and endosperm.

How can I use them?

You can cook them like brown rice, use them in salads, porridge, stews, or pilafs—or mill them at home into fresh oat flour. They take longer to cook than rolled oats, but the texture and flavour are worth it.

Are these oats organic?

They’re Demeter-certified biodynamic, which meets and exceeds organic standards. No synthetic inputs, and a strong focus on soil health, biodiversity, and ecological resilience.

What is the Mitika variety?

Mitika is a soft, creamy-textured oat that performs beautifully in both rolled and whole grain form. It’s known for its gentle flavour and good milling properties.

What are biodynamic preparations?

They’re natural herbal and mineral blends used to enrich compost and support soil biology. Biodynamic farming relies on these to build long-term fertility and plant health. Learn more here.

How should I store them?

Store oat groats in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. They’re naturally shelf-stable and keep well for many months if protected from moisture and pests. More info here

Are these oats gluten free?

Unfortunately, there are no oats that are truly gluten free, and it is illegal to name them as such in Australia. The term ‘gluten’ is used to collectively describe the grain storage proteins (‘prolamins’) from wheat, rye and barley that are toxic to people with coeliac disease. These prolamins have different names in different grains, 'gliadin' in wheat, 'hordein' in barley and 'secalin' in rye. In people with coeliac disease, these proteins can cause issues in the small intestine preventing them from absorbing nutrients. Oats contain a prolamin analog called avenin, which can’t be tested via standard gluten testing. There remains some uncertainty over whether avenin from oats is harmful to people with coeliac disease, with the biggest problem being you can't tell without a biopsy.

Coeliac Australia has a wonderful post on their website explaining the complexities of oats and the gluten free diet.

Product repacked by Sovereign Foods in compostable bags.

Our Bags are made from brown recycled paper and have a 100% natural corn-based compostable biofilm. All you need to do is pop off the label before you put it in your compost (We are looking for a cost-effective compostable solution to our labels). These bags are a good short term but are not completely airtight. When you get your goodies home, be sure to pop your products into a jar and store them in a cool, dry place out of sunlight. You can reuse these bags around the house as a short-term solution to keep things dry and reduce air contact.
