These chemical-free white chia seeds are grown by the Salvetti family—third-generation farmers based in Tolga on the Atherton Tablelands, North Queensland. Under the name Australian Superfoods NQ, the Salvettis specialise in nutrient-dense crops grown without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, on the rich volcanic soils of the Tablelands.

White chia seeds are a naturally occurring colour variation of Salvia hispanica, and offer the same nutritional and culinary benefits as black chia, with a lighter colour that suits certain applications. Grown, cleaned and packed entirely on-farm, these seeds are fresh, local, and full of culinary potential.

Why we love it:

  • Grown in Far North QLD by the Salvetti family

  • 100% Australian-grown chia

  • Grown without synthetic chemicals

  • Lighter colour ideal for pale dishes and baking

  • No imported seed, no irradiation, no additives

Culinary Uses & Nutritional Highlights

White chia offers the same functional versatility as black chia: it absorbs up to 10 times its weight in water, forming a gel that adds texture, structure, and moisture to dishes.

Culinary uses include:

  • Chia puddings with milk, coconut cream or fruit juice

  • Added to smoothies, yoghurt, porridge, or use them to make overnight oats

  • Sprinkled over muesli, cereal, or toast

  • Baked into muffins, breads or crackers

  • Used as an egg substitute in vegan baking (1 tbsp chia + 3 tbsp water = 1 egg)

Visually, white chia blends seamlessly into lighter-coloured foods—lemon curd, coconut yoghurt, pale batters—where black chia might stand out. It’s a small difference that makes a big difference in presentation.

Chia seeds are naturally rich in fibre, omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. They’re a functional pantry staple with wide appeal, especially for plant-based and gluten-free kitchens.

About the Grower

The Salvettis have been farming the Atherton Tablelands since the 1950s, evolving from maize and livestock to premium food crops like chia, popcorn and turmeric. As Australian Superfoods NQ, their focus is now on clean, chemical-free wholefoods grown with a deep respect for the land and for future generations.

Their chia is grown, dried and cleaned on-farm, ensuring full transparency and control from planting through to packaging.

FAQs

Is this chia seed raw and unprocessed?

Yes. These seeds are cleaned and dried on-farm but otherwise unprocessed—no heating, toasting, or irradiation.

Is there a difference between white and black chia?

Nutritionally and functionally, they’re the same. White chia is simply a paler variant of Salvia hispanica, with a neutral flavour and the same gel-forming properties. It’s often chosen for aesthetic reasons in pale or delicate recipes.

Is it certified organic?

No, but it is grown without synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or additives—chemical-free but not certified.

Where are Chia Seeds grown in Australia?

Generally, chia grows best within 18 degrees north or south of the equator. These chia seeds are grown in Tolga, near the Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queenslandwhich is about 17 degrees south of the equator.
