Whole, hulled oat kernels with all the hearty goodness intact. Our Organic Oat Groats come from Blue Lake Milling, one of Australia’s longest‑standing producers of premium oat and grain products and the mill that processes our biodynamic oats. These groats are the foundational form of oats, simply de‑husked and stabilised, leaving them wholesome, nutritious and naturally versatile.

Oat groats cook into tender but textured grains, offering a satisfying chewy bite. They are minimally processed, rich in soluble fibre and great for both breakfast porridge and savoury grain bowls.

Why it’s special

Blue Lake Milling has been processing oats since the 1800s and today operates multiple facilities across Australia, producing oats and grains with rigorous quality management and a commitment to nutritious food production. Their organic lines are processed separately in a dedicated organic plant and certified by NASAA, ensuring these oat groats meet strict organic standards from receiving to packaging.

Oat groats are the least processed version of oats you can buy. Unlike rolled or cut oats, oat groats are only de‑husked and stabilised through gentle steaming. This means they retain more of the whole grain’s natural structure and nutrients, including soluble fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Culinary uses

  • Cook like rice or barley for breakfast porridge

  • Use as a base for grain salads and warm bowls

  • Simmer in soups and stews for added texture and body

  • Blend with vegetables for wholesome stuffing or pilafs

  • Replace rice in risotto‑style dishes

  • If you have a mill or a flaker, make fresh oat flour or rolled oats.

Basic cooking guide:

Rinse groats, then simmer in water or stock (about 3 parts liquid to 1 part groats) for 30–40 minutes, or until tender. Adjust liquid and time based on your desired texture.

FAQs

What are oat groats?

Oat groats are the whole oat kernel with only the inedible hull removed. They are the least processed form of oats and retain the most fibre and nutrients.

How do oat groats differ from rolled oats?

Rolled oats are oat groats that have been steamed and flattened. Groats are whole and unflattened, so they take longer to cook and have firmer texture.

Are these oats Australian?

Yes. These oat groats are processed by Blue Lake Milling in Australia in a certified organic facility. Exact farm sources vary and Blue Lake even import on occasion. We make sure that our batches are only sourced from Australian Farms.

Are they gluten‑free?

We delve into the difficult issue that is Oats and gluten a bit more in this blog post. While many can consume uncontaminated oats, these oats have been processed in environments where other grains are present. If you require strict gluten‑free certification, unfortunately these oats aren't for you.

What’s the difference between oat groats and rolled oats?

Oat groats are the whole grain with only the hull removed. Rolled oats are steamed and flattened groats, meaning groats are less processed and take longer to cook, but retain more of their natural texture and flavour.

Can oat groats be milled into flour?

Yes, groats are perfect for home milling and produce a full-bodied whole oat flour, rich in fibre and nutty in flavour.

Are these oats stabilised?

Yes. These groats are gently stabilised using low heat, which deactivates enzymes that cause rancidity. This extends shelf life while maintaining flavour and nutritional integrity. For those wanting raw, unstabilised oats (e.g. for sprouting), these are not suitable.

Why is it best to stabilise oats?

Freshly hulled oats are rich in natural oils that can go rancid quickly due to an enzyme called lipase. Stabilisation uses gentle heat to deactivate these enzymes, preserving flavour and shelf life without the need for refrigeration or preservatives.
