This medium grain Tachiminori rice is grown on rain‑fed paddocks at Marlivale Farm in Goolmangar, NSW. Known for its firm texture and rich taste, this rice retains its structure when cooked and works superbly in salads, warm bowls or everyday meals.

About the Farm

Marlivale Farm is run by the family of Andrea, Frank, Sophie and Mac, who represent two of five generations working on the homestead located on Widjabul Wia‑bal country in the Northern Rivers. They transformed what was once a dairy farm into pecan orchards and dryland rice fields, restoring the landscape with a soil‑first approach and seasonal farming. Since 1988 the family has been committed to producing nutritious rice and pecans with minimal intervention.

What Is Tachiminori Rice?

  • Tachiminori is a Japanese upland variety suited for growing without irrigation.

  • Dryland‑farmed rice uses natural rainfall only and avoids paddy flooding.

  • This medium grain is lightly polished, giving it a golden hue and retaining the essential fats and fibre

  • It has a beautifully nutty taste with a satisfyingly firm bite

Culinary Uses

  • Use as the base for grain salads, rice bowls or stir‑fries.

  • Pair with roast vegetables or spiced meats to retain structure and bite.

  • Prepare as sushi rice by adjusting water and cooling gently.

  • Make ahead for meal prep—this rice reheats well without turning mushy.

  • Use in warm winter bowls, mixed with beans, greens and herb‑rich dressings.

FAQs

Does this rainfed rice require rinsing?

A rinse is optional. If rinsed lightly it can reduce surface starch but it is not essential for this variety.

How do I cook this rainfed rice?

To cook it, rinse 1 cup of brown rice, add 2 cups of water, and simmer it, covered, for 35–45 minutes until the water is absorbed. Then, remove from heat and let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork

Is it grown organically?

While the farm emphasises all‑natural, minimal‑input farming, this product is not certified organic. The family uses a soil‑first approach, avoids synthetic chemicals and focuses on regenerative practices.
