About the Mill

Four Leaf Milling is a family-run mill in Tarlee, a small town nestled in South Australia’s Gilbert Valley. With the Dunn family farm founded in 1969, and the mill a decade and a bit later in 1983,  Four Leaf Milling has become a respected name in organic food, dedicated to regenerative farming and minimal processing.

Not only do they work with exclusively Australian farmers (much like us), they grow, a number of the grains they clean, mill and pack onsite. The grains are processed using traditional methods and equipment, resulting in a range of fresh, nutrient-dense wholefoods with a strong sense of place and purpose.

What is Oat Bran?

Oat bran is the coarse outer layer of the oat grain (Avena sativa), separated during the milling process. It’s where much of the fibre, protein, and micronutrients reside—making it a powerhouse addition to your pantry.

Unlike refined oat products, this oat bran is screened through fine mesh sieves to ensure a consistent, fluffy texture without additives or fillers. It has a soft, earthy flavour and a pleasant nuttiness when lightly toasted.

FAQs

Is this oat bran certified organic?

Yes, it is certified organic by ACO. The oats are grown and milled in South Australia under strict organic certification standards.

Does oat bran contain gluten?

This is a complicated one and we go through it in a bit more detail, in this blog post.  While oats are often able to be tolerated by people with gluten intolerances, all of Four Leaf Milling's products are processed in a facility that handles wheat, barley and rye, so there is a risk of cross contamination

How should I store oat bran?

Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from strong odours. For best results, keep under 16°C. Refrigeration is recommended if you don’t plan to use it quickly. We have a blog post we have written up about managing pantry pests, you can read that here

What’s the difference between oat bran and rolled oats?

Oat bran is just the fibrous outer layer of the grain, while rolled oats include the whole oat groat that’s been steamed and flattened. Oat bran has more fibre and a finer texture, making it ideal for baking and smoothies. If you want a more complete oat for your porridge in the morning, you can add some oat bran to your rolled oats.

Can I use oat bran in baking?

Absolutely. Try replacing a small portion of your flour with oat bran in muffins, breads or biscuits for added fibre and a subtle nutty flavour.

Oaten goodness

Oatbran is very versatile - can be used in baking and cooking and makes great porridge too. Love the fact that this one is Australian-grown, organic, available in large quantities, and packaged in paper.
