A staple of Indian, Middle Eastern and wholefood cooking, our Organic Besan Flour is made from 100% Australian Certified Organic desi chickpeas, carefully milled by Kialla Pure Foods in Queensland.
Naturally gluten-free, high in plant protein and fibre, besan flour has a rich, nutty flavour and excellent binding properties. It’s equally at home in traditional Indian recipes, gluten-free baking and modern plant-based cooking.
Whether you’re making crispy pakoras, fluffy savoury pancakes or simply looking for a natural egg alternative, besan is one of the most versatile flours you can keep in the pantry.

What is Besan Flour?
Besan flour, sometimes called gram flour, is produced by finely milling dried desi chickpeas (chana dal).
Unlike flour made from the larger kabuli chickpeas, traditional besan has a deeper colour, richer flavour and finer texture, making it the preferred flour throughout India for both savoury and sweet dishes.
It’s naturally rich in protein, fibre and minerals, while also being gluten-free, making it popular with home cooks, bakers and those following gluten-free or plant-based diets.

FAQs
Is besan flour the same as chickpea flour?
They’re very similar, but not always identical.
Traditional besan flour is made from desi chickpeas (chana dal), while “chickpea flour” is sometimes made from the larger kabuli chickpeas. Besan generally has a finer texture and a richer, nuttier flavour, making it the preferred choice for many traditional Indian recipes.
Does besan flour contain gluten?
No. Chickpeas are naturally gluten-free, so besan flour does not contain gluten.
However, it is milled in a facility that also processes cereals containing gluten, so it may not be suitable for people with coeliac disease or severe allergies.
Is besan flour good for baking?
Yes.
It can be used on its own in many gluten-free recipes or blended with other flours to add protein, colour and a subtle nutty flavour. It’s particularly well suited to flatbreads, savoury baking and dense cakes.
Can I use besan flour instead of eggs?
Absolutely.
When mixed with water, besan flour forms an excellent natural binder, making it popular in vegan cooking for fritters, patties, quiches and savoury pancakes.
