These buckwheat kernels (also known as hulled buckwheat or groats) are grown, dehulled, and packed by Bio-Oz, Australia’s leading buckwheat producer, based in Parkes, NSW. Run by Julie and Geoff Brown, Bio-Oz has built a strong reputation for their careful processing methods, chemical-free growing practices, and dedication to the integrity of their gluten-free buckwheat supply chain.

This 4.7kg bag is packed at Bio-Oz’s gluten-free facility, ensuring there’s no risk of cross-contamination with wheat or other glutinous grains – ideal for coeliacs or those with severe gluten sensitivity.

The kernels are creamy-green/grey in colour, with a distinctive triangular shape and mildly nutty aroma.

What are Buckwheat Kernels?

Buckwheat kernels are the hulled seeds of the buckwheat plant – a pseudocereal, not a true grain. Once dehulled, the kernels become soft and quick to cook, making them an ideal gluten-free base for porridges, warm salads, pilafs, or even as a wholegrain side in place of couscous or rice.

They can also be home-milled into fresh buckwheat flour, or toasted (to become “kasha”) for a deeper, nuttier flavour.

How to Use Buckwheat Kernels:

  • Cook like rice or quinoa for a wholegrain side dish

  • Use in porridge with milk, water or plant-based alternatives

  • Toast and use as a crunchy salad topper or in granola

  • Mill at home into flour for baking or pancakes

  • Sprout for added texture and nutritional value

About the Producers:

Bio-Oz (also known as Buckwheat Enterprises) is a small, family-owned operation specialising in buckwheat cultivation and processing. Based in Parkes, NSW, and run by Julie and Geoff Brown, the business has been instrumental in building a reliable Australian supply of high-quality, chemical-free buckwheat.

Their processing facilities are designed to uphold strict gluten-free standards, making them one of the few Australian buckwheat producers offering completely gluten-free flour and wholegrains from farm to pack.

They are also founding members of the Sustainable Farmers of Australia initiative – supporting regenerative growing practices and ecological land management in Australia’s grain belt.

FAQs

Are these buckwheat kernels gluten free?

Yes – these are packed in Bio-Oz’s dedicated gluten-free facility, and are suitable for people with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity.

What’s the difference between kernels and groats?

They’re the same thing. “Groats” is another name for hulled buckwheat kernels.

Can I use buckwheat kernels to make buckwheat flour?

Yes – you can mill these kernels in a home grain mill or high-powered blender to make fresh flour. This is the same raw material Bio-Oz uses for their own flour production.

Product packed by the producer in a multi-walled paper bag.

Great pancakes

I really love the buckwheat kernels. If you're using a hand mill, even the tots can mills them, they're so easy.
Pancakes with a percentage of buckwheat flour taste great and are so much more elastic (less breakages flipping over). We also use a little in our waffles. Highly recommend. The kids love it so we always have kernels in the pantry. Shipping is super fast with Sovereign Foods, so you can be flipping pancakes on the wknd !)

Chemical Free Buckwheat Kernels

I bought this product because I intent to make buckwheat sourdough bread, starting with making my own starter and then the bread, I have made 2 batches to date and am totally satisfied with the result, I am love the tast and especially the fact that this buckwheat is chemical free and grown in Australia, unlike the Macro Brand which calls the buckwheat Organic, yet its grown in China and no information can be produced to the growing process, Macro's reply was it is Organic and certified, but digging I found the only thing Organic is the packaging company in Australia. I am still waiting to see the certification by the growers. I will continue to buy the Australain Chemical free Buckwheat.

Tasty and healthy everyday food

I spread dry buckwheat kernels thin on the tray and roast them it the oven till brown. Then, cool them down in a bowl and put away in airtight plastic containers for storage. I do it with a whole 4.7 kg bag. Every few days, I cook some of roasted kernels in water with salt, add butter or olive oil at the end. Roasted cooked buckwheat tastes nutty with a touch of sweetness. I eat it as a side dish instead of bread/ pasta/ wheat products every day: with my bacon and eggs for breakfast, and with meat/ salad/ veggies for dinner. You can also pour dairy/ non-dairy milk over cooked roasted buckwheat kernels and eat as your morning cereals. It is a great gluten free wheat alternative and you will not put on weight form buckwheat as it happens with modern commercial wheat products! Look up some videos how to roast buckwheat kernels, so you don't burn it. Once you roasted and put away the whole 4.7 kg bag, you'll have a great healthy bread substitute for a few months!

Fantastic Product

Have been enjoying you buckwheat. Whilst they have a great flavour, they tend to look different to Ukraine product when cooked. I'm new to eating buckwheat but have noticed yours clump together and not free like Ukraine product. Apart from this very happy with flavour etc. Dan NSW

My First Try!

A coincidence that I receive a review request on the day I first tried your chemical free buckwheat kernels is probably just that - a coincidence! Hopefully not some creepy, AI generated cyber hocus-pocus! Anyway, after soaking the kernels overnight and cooking for 6 minutes in the pressure cooker, I combined a cup full of hot kernels with some fresh fruit and scoffed it down for breakfast. Suffice to say, it was delicious! Of course, taste is one thing, but what's most important to me, is that it's chemical free, non geo-engineered and that it's grown in Australia. I'm pretty sure I'll be back for more!
