Processed on Queensland's Darling Downs by Neil Sullivan from Australian-grown yellow field peas. Yellow Split Peas are a versatile pantry staple with a mild flavour and creamy texture. Split for faster cooking, they're ideal for soups, dahls, curries, purées and hearty casseroles.

About the Peas

Yellow split peas begin as whole dried field peas. After harvest, the outer seed coat is removed and the peas naturally separate into two halves. This simple process reduces cooking time while creating the smooth, creamy texture that has made yellow split peas a staple ingredient in cuisines around the world.

Their mild flavour readily absorbs the flavour from herbs, spices and aromatics, making them equally at home in hearty soups, Indian dahls, curries, purées and slow-cooked casseroles. They're a simple, versatile pantry ingredient that's been enjoyed for generations.

About the Processor

Neil and Kym Sullivan farm near Linthorpe on Queensland's Darling Downs, where they grow and process a range of Australian grains and pulses.

While many of the products they supply to Sovereign Foods are grown on their own farm, Neil also works with other Australian growers to process quality local produce. These Yellow Split Peas are Australian grown before being sourced, cleaned and split on Kym and Neil's farm.

FAQs

What are yellow split peas?

Yellow split peas are whole dried field peas that have had their outer seed coat removed before being naturally split into two halves. Splitting reduces cooking time while producing the creamy texture they're known for.

What is the difference between yellow split peas and whole peas?

They're the same pea. Yellow split peas have simply been cleaned, had their outer seed coat removed and been split into two halves. This allows them to cook more quickly and break down into a smooth, creamy consistency.

Do yellow split peas need to be soaked?

Generally, no. Unlike many dried beans, yellow split peas cook well without soaking, although rinsing them before cooking is recommended.

Where are these yellow split peas grown?

These peas are Australian grown  on Queensland's Darling Downs and processed by Neil Sullivan. They are sourced from another Australian grower before being cleaned and split on farm.

What is a Dun-type field pea?

These yellow split peas are produced from Dun-type field peas, a traditional Australian variety commonly grown for splitting. Dun-type peas are valued for their mild flavour, creamy texture and suitability for soups, dahls and other slow-cooked dishes.
