What Are Barley Flakes?
Barley flakes are simply whole barley grains that have been lightly steamed and rolled into flattened pieces, making them quicker to cook and easier to digest. Their mild, nutty flavour and satisfying chew make them a versatile ingredient in both sweet and savoury cooking. These flakes retain the germ and bran of the whole grain, preserving their full nutritional value.

FAQs
Are these barley flakes quick-cooking?
Not really, especially when compared to rolled oats. While they cook faster than whole barley but still retain a bit of bite. Simmer 30–45 minutes or soak overnight for faster prep.
Are these barley flakes certified organic?
Yes. Four Leaf Milling is certified by ACO.
Can I use barley flakes in place of oats?
Depends on what you are going for. They are a bit more chewy than oats (even chewier than our chewy oats). But they are very tasty and work great in porridge, muesli, or baking for a slightly different flavour and texture.
Is barley gluten-free?
No, barley naturally contains gluten. The gluten they contain is hordein, a gluten that is a bit weaker and more digestible than glutenin but can still cause issues with people diagnosed with coeliac disease. We have written up a discussion piece on gluten. It might be worth a read to see if these are worth giving a try
How do I store the Barley Flakes?
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. For longer shelf life, refrigerate or freeze in warm or humid climates. For more information about how to store grain and manage pantry pests, have a read of this blog post
